Playing pickleball? You’re hardly alone. The sport has grown tremendously in popularity in the last decade, particularly in older individuals, male and female. The sport is fairly easy to learn, although not easy to master!
Compared to many sports, pickleball is easier on the joints while still providing a good aerobic workout. Playing pickleball improves balance and coordination, important for fall prevention. Many people cite pickleball as a major source of social interaction in their lives also.
A recent report from a national injury surveillance system documented a large increase in eye injuries from 2005 to 2024, paralleling the rising popularity of the sport. Many of these injuries were serious, some even requiring surgery or resulting in loss of vision in the eye.
Falls as well as direct paddle and ball injuries were responsible. Older individuals, male and female, seem to be a greater risk proportionally.
There is currently no official recommendation for eye protection from the national paddleball associations or for the championships. This has been suggested as a measure that might legitimize use of eye protection and avoid injuries.
In the meantime, you might consider eye protection for yourself. No need to wait for the pros!
